London (12,000,000 inhabitants) lies on the banks of the River Thames, in the south-eastern part of England, of which the city is the capital as well as the main political, cultural, administrative, financial and tourist centre. Situated in a strategic position, it has always represented the culture and power of one of the most important empires in history and is certainly among the most sought-after tourist destinations in the European and world scene. The founding of London dates back to 43 BC at the hands of the Romans, who named it Londinium, and since then the city has been the greatest port and centre of trade between Great Britain and the rest of Europe and one of the leading cities in importance on the European and world stage.
London is today a modern and dynamic capital, and is made up of a multitude of multiracial neighbourhoods that bustle around the City, the financial and economic heart of London, administratively independent from the rest of the city.
London, thanks to its characteristic double-decker buses, its red phone boxes, the Changing of the Guard, Big Ben and a whole series of icons that have entered the collective imagination, is also a much sought-after tourist destination both for those who want to spend a short holiday and for those who wish to work (even if only for a few months) abroad and learn a bit of English.
Served by three airports (Heathrow, the main one, Gatwick and Stansted, favoured by low-cost airlines), the city has an efficient transport network and can easily be visited by tube which, despite the high cost, lets you move quickly to any part of it in a decidedly effective way.
The currency, although England has joined the EU, is the British Pound, divided into pence, and London, even though it offers many possibilities to the visitor, is relatively expensive for us Italians.
