Santiago de Compostela. Capital of Galicia but far more famous for the Cathedral with the remains of the Saint, the end point of the world's most famous spiritual pilgrimage. Even in the rain an atmosphere of celebration hangs in the air. I believe that for any religion or faith, attending the pilgrim's mass is a unique experience. It is moving to see so many different people arriving here, alone, in groups, but all united by a big backpack with the inevitable shell, and to see the devotion accompanied by tears and smiles with which they bow before the statue of Saint James.

Day 12 Mar 2007

The destination of the long walk...

Heading to Portugal, we flew with Ryanair to Santiago from where we rented the car for the holiday. The center of Galicia and a sought-after destination of the long pilgrimage for pilgrims heading to the tomb of Saint James, it is a delightful little town in which the sanctuary certainly plays a leading role. Attending the pilgrim's mass that is celebrated every day at noon is quite moving. It is above all moving to witness the arrival of those who, backpack on their shoulders, shell proudly on display, bow before the statue of Saint James. Arriving like that would undoubtedly have a different value, but even for a quick visit it is certainly worth it.
