After listening to the stories of a colleague of mine who has visited Tenerife as many as 6 times, I decided to visit it too. From the moment you arrive you immediately sense you're in a place that lives on tourism. The level of organisation is excellent, you can even reach every corner of the island with public buses. As for the buses, ticket prices are very low, and the same goes if you want to rent a car, you can find a small car for as little as €25 a day, and then fuel, both diesel and petrol, costs less than 90 cents a litre (January 2010). This small island contains a small continent within it, in the north the climate is slightly rainier and colder than in the south, while on Mount Teide, about 3700m high, it's not hard to find a bit of snow. The northern part of the island is without a doubt the most beautiful part.
Not to be missed is the city of Puerto de la Cruz, for me it's a little paradise. You have to go there in person to realise it. Tenerife is a volcanic island, and in fact most of the beaches are black. Another place not to be missed is San Andres, here you find Playa de las Teresitas, whose beach was created artificially with sand imported from the Sahara desert. Especially in the northern part of the island you find small Canarian towns that have kept their appearance almost intact, besides San Andres I suggest Garachico, La Laguna (its historic centre is a UNESCO heritage site), La Candelaria, La Villa de la Orotava. The southern part of the island, on the other hand, is very different, I'm talking about Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas, Costa Adeje. Here everything is artificial, it doesn't feel like you're in Spain.
It's still worth going there on holiday, in fact this mega resort has been built so well that you're impressed. Not to be missed are the various parks, above all the Jungle Park and the Siam Park. Then there's Mount Teide, a mountain 3700m high in the middle of the ocean. Absolutely worth visiting. At about 2500m there's a cable car that takes you to the summit. From the top you'll see all seven Canary Islands. Tenerife is the ideal place if you're into surfing, hiking, trekking. Tenerife is simply stunning, a little paradise.
