Ah, La Gomera! What a truly spectacular place. You may be asking yourselves: 'Where on earth is La Gomera?' - And rightly so, because it really is the best-kept secret of the Canary Islands, at least for now.
La Gomera is a beautiful little island in the Atlantic, lying off the coast of Africa. It is the smallest of the seven Canary Islands, though its size is certainly made up for by its natural beauty and its undeniable charm.
It is a circular island of volcanic origin and has a diameter of just 22 km! Once again, despite its small size, its mountainous terrain offers truly breathtaking views. There are few places left on earth that boast such natural splendour without being disturbed by mass tourism on the verge of suffocation.
La Gomera, on the other hand, offers its visitors the highest level of peace and tranquillity.
Naturally, this doesn't mean there is nothing to do! If you want to enjoy some maddeningly delicious food and a relatively lively nightlife, then there are some renowned restaurants and bars; although for the most part, La Gomera embraces the quiet life.
If you want a hectic life, then you should go to Tenerife, La Gomera's sister island. However, if you want to escape from the madness and enjoy the simple pleasures that life has to offer, then La Gomera is almost certainly the place for you! So, what is there to do on this quiet and hidden gem of an island?
Go for a hike!
It's not everyone's cup of tea, though for those who love nature, La Gomera has a wealth of magnificent hiking trails to choose from. The popular trails of La Gomera range from 5 km up to about 11 km, giving you the chance to work up a sweat!
Enjoy a walk along the beach and through the Valle Gran Rey. This is one of the island's most popular destinations for its breathtaking views and its rich cultural history.
A sunset like no other
We have all watched the sun set a thousand times, each one more beautiful than the last. A sunset on La Gomera, however, is without a doubt one of the most unforgettable experiences one can witness.
You can gather with your friends and the locals over some cold beers as you watch the fire dancers perform to the music of the native pipe and drum while the sun goes down. It really is something to see and offers an experience unlike any other: the clash of various dance anthems exploding from every bar along the Tenerife strip.
Whale Watching
There are few places where you can successfully spot whales in all their natural beauty. La Gomera offers a range of enticing excursions that will make your holiday. A few hours on a boat with a lunch break in good weather doesn't sound so bad, does it?
The Mirador de Abrante restaurant
In the northern region of the island is the splendid restaurant known as: Mirador de Abrante. This restaurant is renowned worldwide for offering the most majestic views in all of La Gomera. Through this incredible glass structure, you can enjoy a unique view of Tenerife from 625 metres above sea level!
Relax
There is a lot of cultural beauty to admire in La Gomera, with a number of local festivals to which tourists are welcome. Most important of all, however, is being able to escape the mundanity and stress of everyday life and relax in paradise.
Get off the beaten track and experience this wonderful hidden gem while it is still relatively untouched by tourism.
