The story
The Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial is the symbol of imperial Spain. You can reach the monastery from Madrid's Atocha station (return ticket 8 €). Built from 1563 onwards, it's an enormous quadrilateral of 200 m by 160, all built in granite. It represents the pantheon of Spain's great monarchs and, besides housing a large church, it also houses several very important museums.
