The story
In Bologna for work, I have a free day to get around. I set off in the afternoon by bus to Rimini, and catch the connection to San Marino. On the Internet I found an offer for a hotel, one night for 50 euros at the Grand Hotel (single room). The place is ideal for forgetting everyday stress; San Marino "city" can be seen in a day, including entry to the castles. A souvenir of the place? A hand-carved chessboard, at the discounted, VAT-free prices of the Republic of San Marino. With less than 100 euros it's a one-day mini-break (amply repaid just by the discount I got on the chessboard compared with Italian prices).
