The story
We reach Castelo de Sao Jorge by taxi, since from the Baixa area (the lower part of the city) there are endless uphill stretches and stairways to climb. We cross the historic quarter of Alfama, the only district of Lisbon to survive the terrible 1755 earthquake that destroyed the whole city. This has allowed the original labyrinth of narrow alleys (becos), little squares and sudden viewpoints called "Miradouros" of the ancient Visigothic and later Arab city to be preserved. It's an atmospheric quarter with a typically ancient look: narrow lanes with washing hung out, old houses and plenty of little restaurants where fado is played at night.
