Reached Montenegro with my Fiat Tipo from Serbia when these two states were still together in the Federation of Yugoslavia. Situated on the road to Kosovo, I made a short stop in the mountain town of Rožaje. This locality presented itself to my eyes as very squalid, with dirt and misery. I stopped above all to telephone home from the post office, which I reached by going down a road towards the centre. I then continued through the mountains to the border with Kosovo (at the time of the trip an autonomous Serb region within the Federation of Yugoslavia). To reach the border you climb a high mountain road where, near the pass, I also find snow. At Rožaje a man with the traditional Kosovo eggshell hat and a girl, probably his daughter, had asked me for a lift to go to Peć and I gave it to them.
The mountain road I had to travel is considered very dangerous because of the presence of bandits, and with them I felt a little safer. Some years later I tried to re-enter Montenegro from the Croatian border near Dubrovnik, without succeeding, since that border was closed.
