At around 5 p.m. on 2 January we arrived in Riga by coach. Both the bus station and the train station are very close to the “Old City”, so we headed straight for the centre in search of the famous Friendly Fun Franks Backpackers Hostel at Novembra Krastmala 29. This hostel is in a very convenient location. From here you can reach all the nerve centres of the city on foot. The city is fairly large but it is very pleasant to take it in while getting lost among the little streets of the Old Town. Wandering around it on foot is the best way to enjoy the beauties this place has to offer.... The only negative note is the presence of many semi-professional women, some hidden behind angelic faces. They are everywhere; in the bars and clubs, strolling the streets and even in the restaurants. All the same, Riga remains a beautiful city and anything but dangerous, with fairly friendly people.

Ratslaukums square is very beautiful. For evening entertainment there are many venues, among which I would advise against the Roxy. It is frequented by disreputable people. The best advice I can give to anyone lucky enough to stay at the Friendly Fun Franks Backpackers Hostel is to follow the pirate and the pretty girls who work there... every evening they will take you to the best venues in the city, and above all in good company!
