About 120 km from Rome you can spend a pleasant day in the snow, skiing or simply strolling and sunbathing. The spot is Campo Catino at almost 2000 metres of altitude; the snow is guaranteed until April, even with the often unsettled weather.
Before arriving you pass through the town of Guarcino, known for the Erzinio delicatessen where you can buy excellent Ciociaria cured meats and white pizza. Many tourists stop at Erzinio before continuing to the mountain resort of Campo Catino. Watch out for the area's weather swings: you set off in sunshine and sudden snowstorms often roll in, even out of season.
There aren't many ski runs that the resort offers winter-sports lovers: there are 3 ski lifts, but the positive side is that there usually aren't many people, so no queues. There's also a ski school, the chance to rent equipment (including bobs and sledges), two hotels and three restaurants, one of them right on the slopes (booking is essential, or else you won't manage to eat there!).
The Ciociaria cuisine on offer is excellent, and if the weather is kind you'll go home nicely tanned. A lovely trip that can also be stretched over the whole weekend.
