The story
A Tuscan comune in the province of Siena, probably of Etruscan origin, it was called Mous Politieus. In 1108 it was attacked and sacked by the Sienese; in 1202 it gave itself to Florence, but in 1232 and 1260 it was retaken by the Sienese, who dismantled its walls. Contested for three centuries between the two rival republics, it ultimately remained in Florentine hands.
