At the last moment I decided to do absolutely nothing this New Year's Eve; then came the surprise phone call I made at 11 o'clock on 31 December to my girlfriend telling her: "I've booked a hotel in Genoa for tonight, is that okay?!" Of course it was okay...!!! We stayed at the Hotel Cairoli, very central and with really kind and helpful staff. We spent New Year's Eve between the squares of the centre and the port, honestly without anything exciting happening. But the next day we fully appreciated the beauties of Genoa's old town, with a little detour to McKenzie Castle too (truly scenic outside but not open to visitors inside). Too late, we couldn't make it to the Lanterna (which was closed anyway!), it'll have to be next time!
