Maya's first trek, hopefully the first of many to come, was done at Monte Arcosu in Capoterra. The WWF nature reserve offers a series of trails and a multitude of flora and fauna typical of Sardinia. The air in November is crisp but mild, despite the winter on its way.
You reach the entrance to the oasis after a few KM of dirt road, along a river that is still dry despite the heavy rains of the past month.
At the access point, you pay €5 each. All in all, the sum seems excessive considering that Sardinia offers plenty of "free" areas with the same Mediterranean scrub and wildlife.
Still, we don't let the expense discourage us and at one of the picnic spots we make an excellent mixed roast and some good roast chestnuts.
With full bellies and full of optimism, Maya first of all on her dad's shoulders and under mum's stern watch, we take a long walk along the trails, and to round off the splendid day the deer bid us farewell, showing themselves off as they display their majestic antlers.
