The Barolo wine festival… a weekend devoted to eating well and above all drinking well…

Day 113 Sep 2008

Arrival

A weekend dedicated to good wine and good food. We head to the Langhe for the wine festival in Barolo. We leave on the 13th at eight and after two and a half hours we arrive in the village of Neive CN, the first stop of our weekend. The village is listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy ( We take a walk around the village visiting the churches and towers, truly very charming. We're about to head towards Barolo but decide to make a detour towards Mango. Once there we discover it's the town of Partisan Johnny... the famous novel. We visit the historic centre and notice that on every corner there's a sign referring to the novel. There's also a castle but it can't be visited. We then head to another town... Barolo. We find the hotel right away... namely Hotel Barolo ( the hotel is nice, there's even a pool. The rooms are large and comfortable.

The price is 100 euros for a double and 70 for a single, breakfast buffet included. After checking in we take a stroll around the town of Barolo, we find the corkscrew museum, very nice, the shop assistant also gives us ideas about what to visit in the area, he was very kind. We also go to visit the castle of Barolo which unfortunately is closed for renovation; it will reopen next year with the wine museum attached. It's time for lunch... and we trust the advice of the gentleman from the museum... Osteria La Cantinella but unfortunately we don't feel comfortable there at all... the staff is rude, the food scanty... indeed very scanty, and the prices... let's not even talk about it. We really had a bad experience! What a shame. On the advice of the gentleman from the museum (this time it wasn't a bluff) we go to visit the town of Grinzane Cavour.

It's just over a 5-minute drive away, we easily find the castle, very imposing and beautiful. It can be visited and inside there's the wine museum. This town is also famous thanks to the historical figure Camillo Benso Count of Cavour... who was its mayor. The town is surrounded by vineyards... as indeed is every little village in the Langhe. Back in Barolo we rest in view of the evening ahead of us... in the square there will be a theatrical performance of The Betrothed. For dinner we were thinking of going to a farm stay (given the bad experience in the afternoon)... and unfortunately for us we discover that in the Langhe agriturismo is synonymous with hotel... not like back home where it's synonymous with eating well... We look for another restaurant among the vineyards but...

nothing, and we decide to go back to Barolo and go to a restaurant we had been advised against by the gentleman from the museum... the name is Rossobarolo, we go in and the atmosphere is very nice, the food too, we ate plenty... But... here too a negative note... we waited 35 minutes for the bill... by then it was 9:35 pm and the show had already started... We run to the square and unfortunately discover that the show hadn't even started, we ask the guys from the company and they tell us there was nobody there to watch them... we look at each other incredulously... Maybe if we'd arrived on time they would have performed... What a shame!

Party

The next day is the big day.. the Barolo wine festival, the king of wines!! We go down to the historic centre of the town and see lots of stalls with various local specialities... there were 29 different stands. We decide to start with the wine and so we take a glass of Barolo (we kept the glass as a souvenir) and then we start tasting the various specialities, from risotto al Barolo, to cured meats and cheeses... etc etc. It was a very pleasant weekend between wine and food... and of course also artistic beauties. Until the next trip!!!
