Preamble to the Maremma

Day 120 Mar 2006

THE DEPARTURE

We leave Turin at 3:30 pm, once we reach Liguria we find decidedly bad weather. We arrive at Castiglione when it's already night and we can't find the camper parking area. Then thanks to a precise set of directions we find it, about 3 km from the town.

UP AND DOWN THE VILLAGE

We approach the town with the camper, given the season we have no trouble parking. We make our way into the medieval village, towards the castle. The view stretches far away, to the south the Maremma, to the north the Tuscan coast. Before setting off again we stock up on porchetta, bread with walnuts and olives and cicioli, just to keep things light. We head towards the archaeological site of Roselle, before lunch we make our way among the remains of the Roman city.

THE SITE OF ROSELLE

We make our way along the streets of what was once a splendid city, the route begins at the walls which, if not exactly cyclopean, command respect. We walk along the outside of them until we reach the Roman theatre, from here we go back down towards the forum, still on the very well-preserved Roman paving. Impressive is the sight of the cisterns that guaranteed the water supply for the inhabitants, now the whole area is fenced off for the safety of tourists or perhaps of the sheep grazing nearby. We return to the camper for lunch, walking along the Roman road that gave access to the city.
