New Year in the mountains: a mini ski week

Day 131 Dec 2006

arrival

We arrived in the early afternoon of December 31, a sunny and warm day; after finding parking for our historic camper (historic meaning it's more than twenty years old, the old boy...), we put on skis and snowboards to test the terrain; given the hour it was impossible to reach the slopes of Gressoney La Trinitè, so we settled for the only one present at San Jean. Little snow but in any case a useful warm-up for the muscles that for a year hadn't been in command of the... gear... In the evening New Year's Eve in the square; despite the cold there were a lot of people, for a revival concert and the characteristic fireworks. Meeting with Chiara and the obligatory toast...

cino and roby

Cino and Roberta arrive, by taxi (the gentry...) We move to the Margherita campsite, with four people things get complicated. Unfortunately the day is rainy (at Saint Jean) while on the slopes it's snowing. We still manage to do a few runs before a snowstorm prevents us from continuing. After recovering, in the evening we dine in the hut by the frozen lake, where people skate. Excellent food, a bit less so the courtesy of the waiter and the owner, who even makes us pay 25 cents each...

shopping

A day dedicated to shopping; in Gressoney you can go wild, from the multitude of grappas to cheeses, to sweets, or by hunting out little craft objects or comfortable and warm clothing. A stop with an excellent cup of hot chocolate can't be missed and, later, a round of speck, honeyed chestnuts, etc etc.
