The story

Cala Gonone lies at the centre of the splendid Gulf of Orosei, on Sardinia's Tyrrhenian coast. A hamlet of the larger centre of Dorgali, Cala Gonone is a few km further down the valley, separated from the main town by a mountain. The village is small but well kept, perched on the hillside. It has a tourist and commercial harbour, many restaurants with good food but little nightlife. It is therefore suited to families, but offers an excellent base for the many trekking enthusiasts who set off from here on a route that explores all the numerous coves of the gulf. My friends and I stayed in bungalows in one of the only two campsites (well equipped and cheap), but there are numerous rooms to rent and hotels, well harmonised with the village. The beaches reachable on foot are beautiful and clean, but the coves (reachable by car, on foot or only by boat) that dot the gulf are splendid.

Cala Luna, Mariolu, Sisine, Goloritze. Beware of the wasps at Cala Mariolu, they're everywhere. Life doesn't cost much, it's a holiday suited to those who want to relax or, conversely, to those who make sport and trekking their summer hobby. Recommended. For the journey, you can opt for the ferry (Sardinia Ferries, Moby, Grimaldi...) so you can have your car with you, but you should know that it takes 2 hours of driving from Olbia to Cala Gonone, not always well maintained and safe. Otherwise, air connections let you reach your destination in a few hours, avoiding the overnight ferry crossing.
