Treviso
A little tour of the city of Treviso and its historic centre
Where Sile and Cagnan keep each other company - Paradiso, IX, v.49
With this line from the Divine Comedy, Treviso, a historic city, welcomes its visitors. Calling it a little Venice is apt, given that the city is crossed in every part by canals that make it very atmospheric and unique.
The meeting, precisely, between the river Sile and the Cagnan (a small canal) is celebrated by Dante in his work.
Treviso is a very intimate city; visiting it means delving deep into the people who live in it, who experience it, but it is capable of offering a great deal, from the very renowned bars, first-quality restaurants, shops and a great deal of history.
The advice is to see it at every hour of the day, to spend a whole day walking through its streets, stopping somewhere typical for lunch and dinner.
The food and wine of Treviso is particularly rich in specialities; among the things that make it especially famous we recall the red radicchio of Treviso, the spritz (an alcoholic aperitif), tiramisu, prosecco and cabernet.
Among the monuments of Treviso we recall
Piazza dei Signori and Palazzo dei Trecento, begun in 1200 and seat of the members of the greater council.
the church of San Francesco, built from 1231 to 1270 by Franciscan friars sent directly by Saint Francis.
Church of San Nicolo, built by the Dominican friars who arrived in Treviso in 1221.
the Cathedral of Treviso, built on the basis of a church from the Roman era.
Piazza Rinaldi, built by the Rinaldi Family.
Buranelli, an ancient navigable canal that allowed commercial exchanges with islands including Burano.
