I won't go on about the wonders of the Eternal City: you can find detailed descriptions in any guidebook.
Just two notes, which I hope are useful:
1. A small guest house just behind the Quirinale is highly recommended (Via XXIV Maggio, 51): Hotel Giardino, 90 Euro for a double.
2Equally recommended is touring the city by scooter:
it opens up completely new perspectives.
