The story

OVADA WINE AND TRUFFLES 2012

Sunday 11 November in the old town of Ovada Wine and truffle market Restaurants with themed menus, shops open in the old town

The Pro Loco of Ovada and of the Monferrato Ovadese organises, with the patronage of the Municipal Administration of Ovada and the collaboration of the Consorzio per la Tutela del Vino Dolcetto d'Ovada and the trade associations, the third edition of the great all-taste event, dedicated to the two most renowned food and wine products of the area: white truffle and wine.

If the wines produced on the gentle hills of the Monferrato Ovadese are among the most famous in Italy, the white truffle of this area is certainly no less so: Gioacchino Rossini called it "the Mozart of mushrooms", a judgement confirmed also by the research carried out by Raoul Molinari and Giordano Berti on chronicles dating back to the Middle Ages, but also on letters of 18th-century travellers: everyone agrees on the extraordinary aroma and quality of the white truffles of these lands, a real delicacy highly appreciated even in the past. The event dedicated to wines and truffles will be a bit like the meeting between Bacchus and Jupiter: if Bacchus is the god of wine, according to the Roman poet Juvenal, the origin of the truffle is instead due to a lightning bolt hurled by Jupiter near an oak.

Again thanks to Jupiter's mythology, truffles have always also been attributed aphrodisiac qualities.

THE EVENT:

The union between the two leading products of the area is natural: the succulent dishes based on white truffle go well with the prized wines of the area, including Dolcetto DOC and above all Ovada D.O.C.G. Past editions have been a success with the public and the critics and have further convinced the Pro Loco of Ovada of the value of the initiative aimed at promoting and spreading the most deserving gastronomic specialities of the area. The beauty of the old town enriches an event destined to grow over time; along the streets, in the little squares and under the porticoes of the town, no fewer than twenty-nine wine exhibitors will await the public, who will have the chance, after buying the Event glass, to taste the best wine production of the area. The Trifolau, as in past years, will welcome visitors inside the Antica Parrocchiale di Ovada: the Loggia di San Sebastiano.

The traders of Ovada will join the initiative, creating themed shop windows; the restaurateurs, rewarded by the considerable public turnout of last year's edition, will create menus based on white truffle, watered by the best wines of the area.

The Pro Loco Restaurant will be set up inside the premises of the former Albergo Ristorante Italia in via San Paolo, opposite Piazza San Domenico.

A little train will be available to the public to reach the Old Town.
