The story
Aquilonia, in the province of Avellino and not far from the border with Puglia, is an agricultural centre of 2,000 inhabitants. Until 1862 it was called Carbonara. It is believed to stand on the ruins of ancient Aquilonia, the city of the Irpini, near which the Romans inflicted a decisive defeat on the Samnites in 293 BC. The Archaeological Park (see photo) was destroyed by the earthquake of 23 July 1930, and houses the Museum of Itinerant Cities (that is, those villages that changed site following catastrophic events), where historical documents, photos and period films of those villages that found a new site are arranged...
