The Gorges of the Raganello are a Biogenetic Nature Reserve that falls within the Pollino National Park. (Region: Calabria, Province: Cosenza). The Raganello concerns a deeply incised river valley, with sheer rock walls from 100 to 700 m high; in the upper part uncultivated pastures dominate. The vegetation on the imposing rock formations is made up of Bosnian pine Laricio pine, associated with various shrubs. Together with our travel friends we begin this adventure to immerse ourselves completely in an almost uncontaminated nature. The Trip starts from the valley of San Lorenzo Bellizzi to end at the foot of Civita, a small village of Albanian origin at the foot of the Pollino massif. You travel about 10 km encountering enormous boulders, waterfalls, natural pools and, very rare flowers and plants that have adapted to the particular microclimate.
The route presents considerable difficulties and it's strongly recommended to tackle it with a guide and with suitable equipment (ropes, canyon shoes, helmet and in the colder periods it's advisable to wear a wetsuit) paying great attention to what could fall from above. In fact it happens that grazing animals make stones fall and not rarely some goats fall into the stream. Toward the end of the trip we encountered two unforeseen events: a rock wall that blocked our path, so we had to resort to ropes, and some tourists to whom we lent our help because they had ventured too far, found themselves in difficulty. Luckily everything went well and on exiting the Gorges the unprepared tourists offered us watermelon to thank us.
