I set off from Rome, together with my cave-diving friend Fabio, in a Toyota pick-up from Dimensione Avventura, on 10 August 2006, around 7.30. After 7 days of travel, 5 of them overland, crossing Austria, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and 2 by ship, touching the Shetland Islands and the Faroe Islands, we finally landed in unforgettable Iceland.
We always found good weather, apart from 2 days of light drizzle in Reykjavik; we slept in a self-erecting Quechua tent and in a winter sleeping bag by Ferrino, and covered a total of 8000 km.
We visited the volcanic area of Askja, Lake Myvatn, the volcanic area of Krafla, we went whale-watching at Husavik and saw the Dettifoss waterfalls and the northern lights, we were in the volcanic cave Grjótagjá, then at Hverfell, at the Godafoss waterfalls and in the town of Akureyri, then in Hveravellir and at the Langjökull glacier and then at Geysir, then at the Gullfoss waterfalls, then in Þingvellir, that is at the ocean ridge, where we saw the Oxararfoss waterfall. Then we went to Landmannalaugar and saw a cave in the ice, then 2 days in Reykjavik. Then it's the turn of the Skogafoss waterfall, then of Dyrhólaey, where we spotted seals and puffins. The next day we're at Kirkjugólf, then see the Svartifoss waterfalls and the Vatnajökull glacier. Then it's the turn of the Jökulsárlón lagoon to see the icebergs by amphibious vehicle.
Then we board at Seyðisfjörður and in 4 days we're back in Rome. The return was faster: from Iceland we landed directly in Denmark, then crossed Germany, Austria and entered Italy, arriving in Rome on 3 September around 22.00.
