A pleasant surprise: Budapest!!

Day 128 Apr 2001

Budapest

Departure from Milan in the company of my friend Antonello, destination Budapest; 4 days 3 nights in a B&B for 650,000 lire.

The city makes a great impression right away and spurs us on to explore it far and wide. After settling in at the Hotel Mercure, a quick snack and out for the night. We have ourselves taken to a disco frequented by Hungarian students where for little money we have a crazy good time. The next morning the tour begins with the Hotel Gellert, the most famous in the city and renowned for its Turkish baths; we continue to Buda Castle, the monument to St. Gerard, the Hungarian National Museum, and we go down into the city centre until we reach Vorosmarty Square and Vaci Street. In the evening we find a characteristic little restaurant where I can't resist trying the Goulash. A night at the disco! Of course. This time we go to Bank! located right in the centre where the tourists are the hosts. The next morning a hearty breakfast and off again to discover new places.

We take the metro and go to visit the Synagogue, Vajdahunyad Castle, the Millennium Monument, the Museum of Fine Arts, the zoo and the municipal park. We return to the room in the evening completely exhausted. After another delicious dinner (you eat very well everywhere) a little stroll along Vaci Street and off to bed. Last day; a ride aboard a funny little electric vehicle all around Margaret Island and lastly the important Parliament Building. What can I say, 4 very intense but unforgettable days discovering a wonderful city!
