On the morning of 13 August my boyfriend and I set off from Malpensa for Crete; after two hours and forty minutes we found ourselves catapulted onto this fantastic island. We stayed a week in Rethymnon and a week in Ierapetra; if you want a tip for seeing the whole island, this is the best way, in fact from Rethymnon we managed to visit unique places like Santorini with its caldera and its white and blue houses, or Elafonisos, which I can assure you is a true miracle of nature!!! Preveli, where the Kourtaliotiko river meets the sea, turning the salt water fresh!!! and finally Knossos, the palace of Minos located just 5 km from Iraklion; the palace is a complex structure of 8 floors, today only one is visible!!! From this week we are left with a very strong memory of the fantastic Rethymnon, a city full of charm; the old town is a labyrinth of pretty little alleys along which come to life
shops and restaurants where, I must point out, you eat really well and cheaply!! After the first week we set off towards the other side of the island, Ierapetra (sacred stone), the southernmost town in Europe. From Ierapetra we managed to reach the island of Chrissi; it was fantastic, completely uninhabited, with its golden beaches covered in tiny white and pink shells and crystal-clear sea; the island is also called the island of donkeys and is easily reachable with an hour's ferry ride. The only downside: at 4 o'clock sharp the last ferry leaves that lets you return to Ierapetra, otherwise you risk sleeping there.
Lastly we visited Agios Nikolaos with its lake Voulismeni, said to be bottomless!! if we have to be honest, Crete is a truly fantastic island in every respect, but if you have little time to visit it, definitely choose the other side of the island, that is Rethymnon, a shore that is less wild and with many more things to see!!!! but the important thing is that you choose Crete because it's really worth visiting, and I mean it: if you go, don't forget Elafonisos and its pink beach!!!!!!!! greetings and see you on the next trip, Nini
