The story

Elafonisi is a magical place consisting of a small islet full of white and pink sand beaches, which is very close to the main beach.

You can reach the island of Elafonissi on foot because the waters are shallow, sometimes without even getting too wet, and so it's ideal for families with small children. It takes its name from the word "Elafi", which means deer in Greek, because people years ago discovered that the little island could be easily reached.

Blinding white sand with pink shades, lagoon-coloured white-turquoise waters that ripple as they catch the breeze, Elafonissi is an exotic place, a flat piece of land with vegetation set against the bare desolation of the Cretan mountains. Were it not for the car park on the mainland, the parasols, the beach bar and the sun loungers, you could mistake it for paradise. Fortunately, the island itself is a protected area.

Most of the beach action takes place on the strip of sea between the mainland and the island; the water is shallow, warm and therefore perfect for a family day.

Not to be missed, 5 km north of Elafonissi, is the Chrysoskalitisa monastery. This monastery was built on a high rock, like a fortress. According to legend, the last step of the staircase leading to the monastery is made of gold, but it can only be seen by those who truly believe in God.
