What can you say about Paros? Some call it the poor sister of Mykonos, others say it is the whole of the Cyclades gathered on a single island. Personally I would say that Paros is the sea, a beautiful sea for every taste that even in high season keeps some quiet corners. Paros is the pretty little harbour of Naoussa and the less celebrated Parikia. Paros is the lovely atmosphere of the village of Lefkes. Paros is also nightlife and far, far too much tourism. Paros really has a bit of everything... but... something is missing in the air, that something that on other islands makes you fall in love.

Day 18 Dec 2015

Arrival and first day in Paros

It's around 11:00 when we disembark at the little port of Parikia and the impact is immediately felt. Goodbye to the wind that blew on Tinos, goodbye to the silence! Crazy traffic under the little windmill that welcomes you to the island, taxis, scooters, lots of people and lots of heat! And here we hear Italian being spoken again. But here's also the atmosphere of the Greek summer, the most stylised and refined one! We get into a taxi and in no time we're out of Parikia, heading towards Lefkes where we've booked our accommodation. Right away we think we haven't made a mistake because the confusion gives way to the sole song of the cicadas! We chose the hotel Lefkes Village and the first impression is really excellent, though certainly less familiar than Carlo's.

Very beautiful is the pool positioned in the highest part of the hotel, on a panoramic terrace from which you can see the coast on one side and the beautiful village of Lefkes on the other. We weren't particularly lucky with the room, the smallest of the family rooms, but overall we were very comfortable with the kindness of the owners, with the excellent and abundant breakfast and with the tranquillity and peace you breathe in this corner of the island. It's 2:00 pm and the delivery to the hotel of the scooter booked from Italy hasn't happened....after a few moments of agitation on the phone, the owner excuses himself saying he has his truck out of service and asks us to go pick up the scooter in person...lacking alternatives we organise the trip to the little port of Aliki, where he has his shop.

So we take the bus back to Parikia and here we change for Aliki, taking the opportunity for a first tour of this stretch of coast. Aliki is small and simple, but with a nice beach, really too crowded for us. So, having picked up the scooter, our stay truly begins. Our first stop is Agia Irini beach, where we spend the afternoon. Very beautiful, especially the final part towards the famous taverna. The water is spectacular, a beautiful green thanks to the reflection of the palms mirrored in this stretch. The first comparison with Tinos comes naturally and we immediately understand that Paros is above all this, a fabulous sea. We return to the hotel, a swim in the pool, a shower and off again towards Parikia, where we enjoy our first Paros sunset. Parikia is quite large but the most beautiful area is limited to the seafront and the old area, totally pedestrianised.

A characteristic Cycladic village, with its white cobbled alleys, full of bars, restaurants and boutiques. Here the evening flies by, when the little streets fill with tourists and music, creating the Greece-from-a-postcard atmosphere so different from the one we left only yesterday!
