The story · 3 days

Strangely little known to Italian tourism, Saxony is a region that offers countless attractions: the pretty and typical little towns, boat trips on the Elbe, castles surrounded by greenery, the enchanting landscapes of Saxon Switzerland. The starting point is the baroque city of Dresden, restored to the splendour of the years before the war, for a pleasant discovery of what can be considered one of the liveliest and most beautiful European cities. Places with a unique atmosphere, where nature and culture blend in harmony, winning over the visitor.

My guide and travel diary on Dresden and Saxony:

Day 14 Aug 2007

“Florence on Elba”

It is the nickname that Dresden earned thanks to its refined architecture and a surprising collection of artworks, made up of precious porcelain, priceless treasures and ancient sculptures. The scenic beauty completes its charm, set in a splendid natural context made up of green hills and large parks that make the ancient capital of Saxony one of the greenest cities in Europe.

Day 25 Aug 2007

Romantic castles, charming gardens and picturesque little towns

The nearby Meissen is a delightful and typical East German town with a thousand-year history, rightly considered the cradle of Saxony. A short distance from Meissen is Radebeul, a 19th-century garden city and starting point of the "wine road". The hunting lodge of Moritzburg, set in a protected landscape area in the centre of a small lake with its image reflected in the placid waters.

Day 36 Aug 2007

Europe's Monument Valley

The landscapes of Saxon Switzerland are spectacular, where you can admire one of the most romantic and impressive corners of Germany, on the border with the Czech Republic. Over the millennia the Elbe has carved out a deep canyon from which bizarre rock formations rise, while on the horizon jagged and isolated flat-topped sandstone towers stand out that seem vaguely to recall the famous silhouettes of Monument Valley in the United States.
