I'm a cold-natured person, which is why I love going to warm places to relax on long tropical beaches, so it would never have crossed my mind to go somewhere where it snows 180 days a year! And yet … I found myself at -10 degrees, wearing layer upon layer of tights, thick socks, thermal tops, fleeces and ski suits without of course having gone skiing!!! At the end of November I happened to come across a tale about Finnish Lapland that spoke of splendid snow-covered landscapes and excursions by sleigh drawn by reindeer or huskies. It was a flash, almost like a revelation, and as I read I saw myself there, aboard a sleigh in the middle of the snowy forest … and at that moment I decided I had to go to Lapland.
The thing is that usually our trips are either last-minute (but those are one-week holidays just to switch off mid-year) or trips that my husband and I organise well in advance, researching and trying to find the best solution, also so as to minimise costs. This time, though, it wasn't an unmissable offer at an enticing price that we absolutely couldn't pass up, nor even a trip studied and prepared … it was a complete improvisation to a destination that until then I couldn't even have placed geographically.
A destination that is, moreover, very popular over the Christmas period, which as it happens is exactly the period we chose, and so it was also a bit reckless to organise a trip with so little notice, and if we really want to tell the whole story, from the financial point of view too, booking the flight in a "peak" period and at the last minute wasn't exactly the best choice but … when I get something into my head it's hard to make me change my mind! So I started surfing the internet in search of information and contacting the authors of various tales to ask for advice on how best to organise this holiday. In the end, after repeated research, we found ourselves with a booking for a Finnair flight to Rovaniemi.
Yes, because Rovaniemi is indeed the capital of Finnish Lapland but above all it's Santa Claus's city, and given the period of the holiday we didn't even want to think about an alternative destination.
