The story

I arrived in Denmark in a Fiat Tipo in the company of a friend, crossing the border between Germany and the Jutland peninsula. Jutland is the continental part of the country. First stop in the town of Kolding, where we stop to stretch our legs and look at the castle. After this short break we continue to Jelling, where in front of the church there are rune stones and burial mounds dating back to the 'dawn of time'. Nothing spectacular in these remains, which are the oldest testimony to Danish history. We drive alongside a small lake where the reconstruction of a Viking ship is moored, and continue to Billund, where we visit the Lego amusement park. Legoland stands right opposite the factory of the famous coloured bricks, and many of the world's monuments are reproduced with them. You can see the miniature reconstruction of Mount Rushmore, a Norwegian fjord and much more besides.

There are also several attractions in the Gardeland style, where you can spend a peaceful day without having to queue for hours. After the overnight stay we go further north, where we visit the fine red-brick castle of Spottrup, surrounded by a moat and enclosed by mighty walls. In the afternoon we stop to see something very unusual: in the middle of a lagoon the outline of the whole world has been rebuilt, so you can walk from North America to Australia in a few seconds. Nothing to do with the various miniature countries: here you walk on bare ground, at most covered by sparse vegetation. What's more, this attraction is little advertised and run on a family scale. Our itinerary in Jutland ends at Hanstholm, where at the port we board for Iceland via the Faroe Islands.

On the way back from the Iceland tour we return to Denmark, where we cross Jutland and the border with Germany and take the road for Italy. I have been to Denmark on two other occasions (see the related itineraries).
