The story

We booked our one-week holiday at an Italian agency near where we live, only to realise that contacting the accommodation agencies in Croatia directly by email is much cheaper! We stayed in an attic apartment very close to the centre of Crikvenica and a few steps from the sea. Everything went really well, so much so that this year we thought we'd go back around the same period to visit the city of Zagreb and the Plitvice Lakes National Park. Our budget for a week, including the food shopping we did almost every day plus a few treats, was €150 each (petrol for getting around included). We visited the city of Rijeka and a few little spots near Crikvenica. From Rijeka we drove up to the sanctuary of Trsat (very close and well signposted how to get there), where the castle of the same name also stands and from which you get a beautiful view over the city below.

The sanctuary is a place of pilgrimage; outside, in the park, there's even the bronze statue of Pope John Paul II, a monument called precisely "The Pilgrim of Trsat!".
