We enter Austria crossing the Jaufen Pass
Visit to Innsbruck. The capital city of the Tyrol. A walk along the central street, the Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse, shows all its character with its baroque buildings. Nearby we find the Goldenes Dachl, the golden roof that is the symbol of the city. It is covered with 2657 gilded copper tiles. For any information about the city see
Visit to the "Kristallwelten", the Swarovski crystal museum. Inside, many works of art and curiosities concerning crystals. Naturally, on the way out there is a very well-stocked shop, but given the creations inside we can consider it an integral part of the museum.
visit to Salzburg
Visit to the Hohensalzburg fortress. By funicular we reach the Hohensalzburg fortress. Stunning from up there, the panorama over Salzburg. The visit to the Fortress is made with a multilingual portable player that, little by little, room by room, guides us through the rooms visited up to the watchtowers. Note the princely halls, the puppet museum and the Reiner [1914-1918] regimental museum. Visit to the centre of Salzburg. The city always lives in the memory of Mozart, in my opinion with too much commercial exploitation. It remains a fact that in every part of the town you live in the musical imprint. We had dinner at Restaurant Zum Enespiegel, a truly special place right in the centre. We ate very well... although, like all restaurants in Austria, it is a little expensive...
Leaving Salzburg towards Lienz we find Golling, a small village known for its 75 m waterfall, the Schwarzbacher Wasserfall (better known as the Gollinger Wasserfall).
Visit to "Erlebnisburg Hohenwerfen" Castle ( )
Visit to the ice caves "Eisriesenwelt" ( ), the largest ice cave in the world. It extends for more than 40 km inside the mountain. It takes a bit of patience to go up, 20 minutes' walk from the car park, then the cable car (from 1084 to 1586 m) and then another 20 minutes climbing always on foot to the cave. The spectacle is stunning. In a walk of almost an hour inside the cave we see stalactites, natural sculptures, tunnels and very strange shapes all made of ice. The temperature in the cave in summer does not exceed 0°C. but there is no need to worry about the cold, given the steps to climb...? There is no artificial lighting inside. Visitors are given an acetylene lamp and along the way the guide lights up the ice shapes with magnesium light. The cave can be visited from 1 May to 26 October.
Night in Kaprun
Visit to the "Hochgebirgs-Stauseen Kaprun" dams A short distance from the town of Kaprun, in the Kasselfall-Alpenhaus area, we can take a bus that takes us up to the largest lift in Europe (it can hold up to 185 people). It will help us overcome the 430-metre difference in height, then we take another bus that took us up to the artificial lake of Mooserboden at 2,040 metres. For those who like skiing, on the other side of the mountain there is a huge glacier that guarantees skiing all year round (it also snowed here two nights earlier,
