TRANSPORT
Magnificent to tour by hire car (but watch out for the topes: the notorious Mexican speed bumps). With a crew of 4 people we hired a sturdy Isuzu (don't forget to ask for it with air conditioning).
ACCOMMODATION
Cancun: Hotel booked from Italy Chichen Itza: Hotel found on the road with a nice close encounter with a Tarantula Merida: Hotel booked from the local and efficient tourist office Uxmal: Hotel found on the road Akumal: External guests of a Ventaglio Village (destroyed a few days after our departure by a tornado)
CLIMATE: Excellent. Hot, but if we wanted the cold we would have stayed in Como.
WHY GO
- For the archaeological sites - For the sea - For the Mexicans and their culture - For the food - Because Mexico is made for the independent traveller
QUICK VERDICT
Cancun: 2 out of 5 (artificial) Chichen Itza: 5 out of 5 (magnificent archaeological site: El Castillo above all) Izamal: 3 out of 5 (known as the ciudad amarilla - the yellow city) Merida: 3 out of 5 (one of the most beautiful colonial cities of the Yucatan) Uxmal: 5 out of 5 (the Pyramid of the Soothsayer is an absolute must-see and must-climb) Tulum: 3 out of 5 (the only archaeological site on the sea) Akumal: 3 out of 5 (sea, sea, sea and then more sea)
