Until today, very little was known about Ek Balam, but recent research has established the importance and richness of this ancient city, built a century before Christ. Surprisingly well-preserved sculptures have risen from the past among the trees, without revealing the whole mystery surrounding the ancient city. Located 22 km from Valladolid (Yucatan), it covers a total area of 12 square kilometres and consists of 45 buildings surrounded by stone walls. It is said that it was founded by a lord called Ek'Balam or Coch Cal Balam, who came from the east. Numerous masks, decorations and stone statues depicting the jaguar have been found, representations dedicated to Kinieh-Ahau, God of the sun who at night turns into a black jaguar, and to the famous figures of the city, mainly effigies of governors.
The tomb of King Ukit Kan Le'k Tok' contained some offerings, including necklaces of shells and snails, a large ceremonial obsidian knife (a sharp stone). Objects of bone, jade, representations of faces and terracotta vessels were also found. The main site, called Acropolis, measures 158 metres in length and 32 metres in height. There is a large number of vaults, placed on different levels and connected by corridors. Beneath the terraces, the symbols embedded in the sculptures that decorate the temple are true artistic marvels. Here too we had our mega tour guide Elena from Iguana Boat..... guys, never spent such an intense day so full of news and information but also so much fun and interesting, well done Elena again, next trip to Mexico only if you are there as guide!
