Second excursion, and second early start, and honestly if yesterday's was a mega excursion, today's was more than fantastic. Our tour lasted 13 hours, all with a magical guide with an Italian passport and a heart beating strongly Mexican. Yes indeed, our guide today, Elena from Iguana Boat in Playa del Carmen, really made us fall in love with Mexico..... a great "storyteller" she managed to range from Maya history, to traditions, to nature with mega information on all the inhabitants of the Biosphere. Thank you Elena, in a single day you took us by the hand and accompanied us on a magical journey. Rio Lagartos is a suggestive town in the Mexican state of Yucatan located about 30 kilometres north of Tizmin and 230 from Merida and Playa del Carmen.
The small town overlooks a splendid lagoon that flows into the Gulf of Mexico, inside the Special Biosphere Reserve on the northern coast of Yucatan. Declared a Biosphere Reserve with its 60,000 hectares, Rio Lagartos hosts the largest population of American flamingos in Mexico, with about 44,000 birds. Its coastal lagoons are seasonal resting areas, as well as winter territory, for migratory and local birds, with a current record of 388 different bird species in the area. Rio Lagartos also boasts 60 kilometres of splendid unspoilt beaches within the Bio-reserve, reachable by boat directly from Rio Lagartos.
