My first intercontinental experience, between Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Flight to Cancún with Lufthansa/Continental, about 900 euros, plus accommodation and internal transport around 280 euros. Travelling by local buses is an experience in itself. Unforgettable Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Caleta Tankah. We deliberately skipped the theme parks, while it was truly thrilling to venture a little in search of hidden cenotes near some Maya hut. Entering the pueblos and talking with the people is what stays with you above all. They lack everything, yet in reality they lack nothing, and their smiles prove it.

Day 129 Jul 2004

Traveling!

We set off for Cancun with a Lufthansa flight via Frankfurt to New York, from where we continue with a Continental flight. Unfortunately a cyclone somewhere over Florida forces us to stay on the Newark runways for 5 hours...We arrive in Cancun at 01:00 at night, completely exhausted. We're greeted by a heat so humid it takes our breath away. We take a taxi to reach the hotel we booked from Italy, where we allow ourselves a few hours of sleep. The hotel is a three-star but in reality it's quite spartan and not very clean...Welcome To Mexico!

Merida

Early in the morning we reach the Bus Terminal in Cancun, where we buy a first-class ticket to Merida. The Terminal is utter chaos but the organization is impeccable. They check in our luggage and we settle into the comfortable armchairs where we continue our interrupted sleep! We soon realize we've made a big mistake leaving our jackets in the luggage..the temperature is 15°C!!..and we understand why Mexicans travel with brightly colored plaid blankets in tow. The journey lasts about 4 hours, and when we reach the outskirts of Merida we are finally greeted by the Mexico we expected. We take a taxi (actually without seats!!!!) and reach the hotel right in the center. We dedicate the day to visiting Merida
