Relaxing at the Ventaclub on the island of Eleuthera

Day 117 May 2000

The butterfly island

Eleuthera in the Bahamas is a wild island, with very few buildings and hotels, the Ventaclub has a private beach of practically 7 km. The food is more than acceptable, the rooms very nice, in the sea in front of the village there's a bit of seaweed, nothing dramatic, but walking for 10 minutes along the beach you reach a fantastic protected bay, deserted, with pink sand and crystal-clear sea.

After so much traveling around, we are finally about to leave for the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, where a period of pure idleness awaits us. To reach the Ventaclub from Orlando, you need to make a stopover in Miami, then take one of those not-so-recommendable twin-engines that in about an hour reach Eleuthera, after flying over with some tossing fantastic little islands and lagoons of the Bahamas. Then, with a taxi organized by the Resort, in an hour you reach the village.

(review) Eleuthera is a very thin and very long island (3x160 km) that thanks to the formidable perimeter of its coasts (over 500 km) offers enchanting beaches, coves and promontories interspersed with delightful villages that have made it one of the favorite Bahamian destinations for visitors. Starting from the south of the island the most important centers are Rock Sound, with the nearby Ocean Hole, a sort of lake connected to the sea by an underground tunnel, Bannerman Town, a village of only 40 inhabitants and Tarpum Bay. Continuing north you reach Governor's Harbour, the main settlement and then Gregory Town. Harbour Island is located north of Eleuthera and 10 minutes by boat is enough to reach it. It is one of the most beautiful islands of the Bahamas. Small, almost intimate, it offers a 5 km long pink beach.

Ventaclub

The Ventaclub is very well organised and looks directly out onto a beautiful, very long white beach, the exclusive property of the club because there are no other buildings except a couple of unoccupied little houses. The cottages are set in a lovely tropical garden, dotted with palm trees and bougainvillea. Of course, here the sea is the only reason to visit, because there are absolutely no other attractions to see, nor entertainment other than what's inside the resort. The nearest village is about 3 km away and you can reach it with the bikes provided free of charge: there's nothing to see there, except to snoop around and see how the local people live. The package is All Inclusive, and around these parts Rum and Pina Colada are a delicacy not to be missed; the cuisine is Italian in style, as is Ventaclub tradition.

The sea is pleasantly warm, especially in the afternoon, with a bit of seaweed brought in by the tide. But with a pleasant 15-minute walk along the beach, you reach an enchanting and solitary bay, with rocks emerging from the pink sand and a lagoon of incredible clarity with giant starfish. Here paradise is close at hand. The weather was definitely pleasant, despite my worry because the month of May is starting to be at risk of rain. Instead, apart from the usual scattered clouds that rarely covered the sun, it rained only for half an hour in a week, while the temperature was always very pleasant, not too hot. Only for a couple of days was there a bit of annoying wind. Quite a few people came from Italy for a sea-only stay; in my opinion it's not really worth it because, given the proximity to Florida, a little trip there is a must.

Definitely not recommended for anyone looking for entertainment. Moreover, there aren't even any excursions to do, except for a few boat trips or to the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, which however is quite far away and reached by plane, so the excursion is quite expensive.
