Text and photos by Piero Cogoni.
As a child I used to hum Roberto Vecchioni's song “Samarcanda” without bothering to locate it on a map; I was content to imagine it so far away as to be unreachable anyway and wrapped in a mystery heightened by my being a child. Over time I began to travel, giving priority to the most interesting, most visited and most accessible places, also in light of the political, security or religious problems that limit our choices. As the traveller's curiosities were satisfied and the destinations that interest us grew fewer, you start looking for those places we may have set aside, and so it was that when I happened to leaf through a catalogue I at once fished out those childhood images and decided that would be my next trip, and so I went to a travel agency.
