What to see on Koh Samui
Ang Thong National Marine Park
Ang Thong National Marine Park is an unspoiled archipelago of 42 islands in the Gulf of Thailand with imposing limestone mountains, dense jungle, white-sand beaches, fertile mangroves, waterfalls and hidden bays and lakes to explore. Within sight of Koh Samui, Ang Thong park is a protected area of more than 100 square km of land and sea and is home to a rich variety of exotic animals and marine creatures
Big Buddha
On the northern coast of Koh Samui is the famous Big Buddha shrine. Probably Samui's best-known landmark, the 12-metre-tall golden Buddha can be seen from several kilometres away. Inside the surrounding temple there are many shrines and other small decorated Buddhas. There is also a small market selling a wide range of lucky charms and other souvenirs, as well as numerous food stalls.
Bophut Fisherman's Village
Fisherman's Village Samui is a historic part of Bophut, with rustic-style buildings housing boutiques, fashionable restaurants and a small selection of hotels along the narrow Beach Road. Every Friday, the whole area becomes the site of the Fisherman's Village Walking Street market, drawing a large number of shoppers from all over the island for the extraordinary variety of goods and the lively atmosphere.
Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks
Art often imitates nature, but less common is nature imitating art, especially the art of the bawdy. But in Thailand anything is possible, including, on Koh Samui, the natural geological formations known as Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks (the Grandpa and Grandma rocks), which resemble, respectively, male and female genitalia.
Koh Tao
Koh Tao - which means "turtle island" - lives up to its name, being the destination of choice for scuba diving in Thailand. The perfect white-sand beaches that surround the 21 km² hilly island are ringed by the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand. The vibrant coral reefs are home to a wide range of exciting and colourful marine creatures, including turtles, of course.
