Day 125 Jan 2005

In the space of four hours or a little more a bus took us from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. Initially we had planned to spend three or four days in this city state, but insistent rumours obtained during our journey had told us that the cost of living is quite high. For this reason we drastically cut the time and stayed just two days.

Having arrived in the city in the early afternoon, we hastened to call a fellow townsman of ours... A fellow townsman of ours??? Well yes! Our saviour goes by the name of Michele Pavanello and just like us is a Treviso native, the real deal. Michele works as a cook in a prestigious hotel in Singapore, and he gave us a hand in finding accommodation in the city. Just enough time to orient ourselves a little and to withdraw some of the new currency and we grabbed the first available taxi, to head towards Michele's hotel. Our good friend was already there waiting for us with open arms... Michele immediately proved to be a very helpful and interesting person, who just like us has travelled half the world working as a cook in the most unthinkable places. While he was leading us towards our accommodation, he explained a little about how things work in the city, just to give us an idea.

Having arrived at the hotel... yes, you heard right, HOTEL! I don't even remember when the last time we slept in a hotel was: I mean with a real furnished room, hot water, fresh newspapers in the morning, swimming pool and all the rest. Well, I was saying, once we arrived at the hotel and got over the shock of extra luxury, we reached the room to drop off our backpacks and here came yet another surprise: good old Michele insisted on sponsoring our endeavour and wanted to pay for our room. He couldn't have done more than that. So, what am I trying to say with this: anyone can be part of our team, it takes so little... ha, ha, ha!

As soon as Michele left us, we fell into a deep sleep from which we woke only late in the evening. Obviously, given the little time available, we couldn't waste the evening in the hotel, so having taken a shower, we headed to the centre to munch on something. For dinner we chose a kind of open-air little market suggested to us by Michele, the Newton Circus, where we ate well at a relatively low price, and then, with our money counted out, we headed off to discover Singapore by night... as usual look but don't touch, all the venues cost a bit too much for us, even though in the end we found something small. The evening ended in the morning, with a long walk from the city centre to the hotel, to save the taxi money.

Day 226 Jan 2005

The second and last day we dedicated entirely to visiting the city, it has everything it can offer the tourist. Singapore is a not very large city, with Western reflections, quite wealthy and very well kept, with lots of greenery and extreme cleanliness. But apart from this, don't expect spectacular monuments, historic buildings and so on... nothing sensational.

As usual the customary China Town is not missing, which in this case however deserves particular attention, because it is immersed in wonderful colonial buildings perfectly restored. To tell the truth it is so tidy and clean that it doesn't even look like the usual China Town we've become used to seeing in the other countries visited... but truly very beautiful!

In the evening we headed to the airport where around midnight a flight awaited us to a new country... actually a new continent, Australia!!!
