Tioman is the largest and most spectacular of the islands on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. Described as a paradise for diving and snorkelling, it actually struck me more for the contrast between its white beaches and its green forests.

SUMMARY VERDICT 3 out of 5: Waters less crystal-clear and beaches less charming than those of Koh Samui. In exchange, the island offers a decidedly more interesting hinterland.
