Unforgettable Bali in Indonesia
Often described as a paradise for its volcanic mountains, green rice terraces and white-sand beaches, Bali is one of the 17,000 islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago in Southeast Asia. Besides its remarkable culture and its world-class diving and surfing,
Bali is the place where many people come for weddings, honeymoons and for the total relaxation of mind, body and spirit. With evocative temples and architecture that hint at its Hindu, Javanese and Dutch colonial history, Bali became famous in the 1970s as a top destination for surfing and diving. Dive shops can be found all over the island and the crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, colourful marine creatures and sunken ships offer excellent diving and snorkelling adventures.
While Bali comprises several regions and towns, some of the main tourist destinations include Kuta, known for its splendid beaches and lively shops and nightlife. Ubud is the island's art and cultural centre, while the lively capital, Denpasar, is the main transport hub. The towns of Sanur and Seminyak offer many fabulous beachfront resorts.
Bali's Hindu culture is among its biggest attractions. The island is dotted with tens of thousands of temples that vary in size, shape and architectural design. With each of these temples hosting festivals at various times of the year, the island is always alive with performances of traditional Balinese music, dances, costumes and rituals.
Besides its beautiful beaches, Bali offers plenty of family fun and outdoor activities, from botanical gardens to jungle hikes and rafting. Wellness services abound on the island, from beach massages to luxurious spas. Shopping is excellent, with luxury fashion boutiques and craft shops selling local handicrafts. Food choices range from street vendors to fast-food chains and restaurants serving both Indonesian dishes and international cuisine.
Buses, taxis and minibuses, called bemos, are the public transport around Bali.
