Trip organised with a tour operator (Staff & Co and ZanzibarViaggi). €2,650 for the flight Catania - Rome - Mombasa - Zanzibar return (outbound with Air Italy, return with BluPanorama), a two-week stay in a resort, with a 4-day safari in Tanzania among Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara (4-star superior accommodation in the resort, comfortable lodge during the safari). Malaria prophylaxis, Metakelfin tablets; the Italians I met in Zanzibar told us that any prophylaxis is completely useless anyway (they take nothing at all); in Africa, malaria is treated like a trivial flu and you're cured in just 3 days (if you're treated in Italy, though, there's a chance you won't recover!!). Many instead recommend the vaccine against yellow fever and hepatitis (my travel companions had both). I'd advise leaving with peace of mind and taking just ordinary mosquito repellent.
In short, for Italians in Zanzibar, catching malaria is for "unlucky" people, since falling ill takes several bites from infected mosquitoes (and on the island the risk is minimal). the tsetse fly does kill, yes, but according to one of our guides in Tanzania, only if it bites you once or twice a day for a few years... (he'd already turned 30 a while ago...). In Zanzibar there are no tsetse flies, while during safaris in Tanzania you'll see quite a few.
Zanzibar is the ideal place to relax. The northern beaches are beautiful. The locals are friendly. Trust the beach boys: with them you can safely go on excursions without spending a fortune. A holiday enlivened by the flight to Tanganyika for a safari in the parks of Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara and Tarangire, sleeping in tents or bungalows.
A unique, unrepeatable trip. The most beautiful of all the ones I've described on the Viaggi scoop site.
