A short excursion in Swaziland, during the South Africa tour.

Day 130 Jan 2003

After taking care of the bureaucratic formalities at the Sandlane border post, we venture into the small African country. Along the E20 we find the Milwane Wildlife Sanctuary Nature Reserve [Tel: (09268) 528-3944] and decide to visit it. This reserve gives us a first and meaningful taste of the wonderful animals we will encounter on the photo-safaris that follow. We can walk the trails with our car... We manage to see several zebras, warthogs and antelopes up close; we also recognise some wildebeest, but our curiosity is drawn to the small pond where we spot a small group of hippos. We stay in position in sacred silence for a good half hour, but they do not want to give themselves to the attention of us "photographers".

Unsatisfied at having seen only nostrils, eyes and ears of hippo (impatient with the great heat, these large pachyderms prefer to stay completely submerged), we continue our march towards the capital, Mbabane: nothing exceptional.
