21.08 Rientro a Johannesbourg

Day 18 Aug 2004

Travel itinerary: Flight from Bologna with Lufthansa to Frankfurt and from there a South African Airlines flight to Cape Town via Johannesburg. Pick-up of the rental car, a nice first-series Golf, which they call chico, brand new and fire red.

09.08 Cape Town

Visit of the city and the promontories that surround it.....unfortunately impossible due to bad weather to go up the Table Mountains. Relax at the Waterfront shopping centre and splendid view of the "unveiled" Table Mountains at sunset.

10.08 Cape of Good Hope Peninsula

Visit of the Cape and its promontories in an environment characterised by fynbos, by baboons and by ostriches that wander on the shores of the Ocean. A nice, but smelly, stop at Boulders Beach with its funny penguins. Transfer to Hermanus with first encounter with the whales at Gordon's Bay.

11.08 Hermanus - Oudtshoorn

Morning dedicated to whale watching...splendid whales a stone's throw from the shore!!! Transfer to Oudtshoorn, homeland of the ostriches.

12.08 Oudtshoorn - Knysna

Visit to one of the many ostrich farms, with guided tour and ostrich ride, very entertaining. Transfer, through the Wilderness NP, to Knysna, homeland of good fish (excellent dinner on the seafront) and of oysters in particular.

13.08 Tsitsikamma NP

Visit to the park, which greets us on arrival with various whale sightings, and trekking to the Storm River and its suspension bridge. On the way to Porth Elizabeth, stop at Jeffrey's Bay, homeland of South African surfing, and relax on its beaches full of shells.

14.08 Addo NP

First photographic safari in African land...truly exciting...so many elephants, and then buffaloes, kudu, zebras, ostriches, warthogs, jackals, but above all him, the king of the forest (majestic!!). In the evening we were very tired, from the attention paid to the sightings, but extremely satisfied.

15.08

Transfer flight with SouthAfrican Airlines from Porth Elizabeth to Durban and transfer to the Hluhluwe WP, with a new chico. First animal sightings while reaching the camp for the night...in particular the first giraffes.

16.08 Hluhluwe WP

Day dedicated to the photographic safari inside the park, famous for its rhinos, and indeed one encounters many of them, together with elephants, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, nyala....

17.08 Swaziland

Approach transfer to Kruger from Mkhuze to Piggs Peak in Swaziland.

18-19-20.08 Chitwa Chitwa Private GR

Intense days dedicated to photographic safaris in the private reserve. Words cannot describe the lodge and the sightings: in particular the leopards encountered several times (above all the leopard in the tree with the prey and the two cubs playing in the bush at dusk) and the lioness with her cubs sighted at night. Unforgettable. Afternoon of the 20th dedicated to the Blyde River Canyon and its geological features.

21.08 Return to Johannesburg

Visit to some waterfalls near the Blyde River Canyon and transfer to Johannesburg for the return to Italy.
