Will we make it through in an ordinary car? All the maps of Namibia marked the tracks north of Opuwo as passable only with a 4x4, but the desire to venture into the Himba region was such that we decided to reach Opuwo to get information a bit more up close. In Opuwo they tell us it's difficult, but not impossible; the main hazard is the long sandy stretches where our Polo could get bogged down. We decide to try. Stocked up with water and food, off we go; along the road we give a lift to a couple of Himba girls, who despite the blanket meant to avoid leaving ochre on the seats still leave us a nice reddish souvenir (the car wash lads will have to deal with it).
Some stretches are truly treacherous and it's necessary to get out to check the condition of the sand better; it would be child's play with an off-roader, but with an ordinary car...! The journey from Opuwo to Epupa Falls lasts about 5 hours, but in the end we reached our destination safe and sound and with no damage to the car. At Epupa Falls there's a camping area run by the local community, well positioned over the falls. For the return, no problem, you just have to retrace the tracks of the previous day......
