A series of gravel hairpin bends passable only by 4x4 or mountain bike, with steep gradients, lead from South Africa to Lesotho. This is the Sani Pass, at an altitude of 2,900 metres. About ten huts, often buried in snow, house the border officials, and a chalet welcomes the few tourists who venture up to 2,900 metres. It is one of the most unspoilt places in southern Africa, protected because it is almost inaccessible.
The Sani Top Chalet, considered Africa's highest pub, is the favoured starting point for climbing to the top of Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482 metres), the highest peak south of Kilimanjaro.
Unfortunately they are trying to asphalt this spectacular road, unique in the world; let's hope someone stops them!!!
