Jambo everyone, my name is Roberto and in July I spent 2 weeks in Watamu together with my other half Olivia. We are Kenya veterans, this was our sixth trip, but we had never met a guy like Abdul, who by the way is the young director of a safari agency in Watamu, called Safari Kenya Top. One afternoon we were at the bar there in Watamu together with two friends we had met at the hotel and we were just talking about the fact that we still had to book safaris and excursions, and they called Abdul, whom they had met on facebook in the previous months. Shortly after, Abdul arrived at the meeting together with two close friends of his: Sofia and Michele, and with a little monkey called Salim on his shoulder. Needless to say, we immediately hit it off both with Abdul and with Sofia and Michele, who are also Kenya veterans.
With Safari Kenya Top we did the excursion to Malindi together with Sofia and Michele and also with the other two friends who had introduced us to Abdul, and then we did the excursion to Robinson Island and there we were together with a nice group: there were more than 10 of us. What can I say, Malindi always has its charm and the trip to Robinson was very pleasant, well organised, and you can tell that Abdul is used to managing large groups of people because everything went very well anyway and we had a lot of fun. We set off from Watamu with an ordinary car and a minivan. Abdul drove the minivan, while we got into the car driven by Michele... we had a lot of fun...
Michele was immediately nicknamed by us "risk" (he drove very well and has a Kenyan licence, and he's used to driving in Kenya, in fact he knew the road from Watamu to Robinson perfectly, but such a rapport of familiarity developed with him that we loved joking about everything just to laugh about anything). I also gave another nickname to Abdul and Michele: "the two crazies" because those two, when they're together, crack jokes and tell anecdotes that literally made me double over with laughter... so I nicknamed them that way because they're really likeable and also a bit mad! Along the way we made quite a few stops: golden beach, salt pans, marsh with pink flamingos... Abdul and Michele stopped several times to allow especially the kids who had never been there to take all the photos they wanted. When we arrived in front of the island we took a canoe to reach the island.
I must say that the red crab enjoyed at the island's restaurant is truly exceptional and it's the only place in all of Kenya where you can eat it; in fact it's famous as the "Robinson red crab". Then besides the crab you also eat many other dishes including a coconut rice that is something exceptional and then various types of fish. The second week we were also supposed to do the two-day safari at the Ngutuni Private Reserve, but unfortunately I had health problems and so we had to give it up.
I was very sorry not to be able to do the safari, since I cared a lot about it because Abdul had explained to me that in that reserve, which is near Tsavo East, you can do off-road safari like in the Masai Mara and even night safari! We will certainly come back for the seventh time, hopefully as early as January to do the safari at Ngutuni, since I'm really curious to experience the night safari and the off-road safari, naturally with Abdul of Safari Kenya Top.
