Alitalia flight Rome-Cairo, with award tickets. At Cairo airport you get the visa, about 25 euros per person, then you change euros into Egyptian pounds, or Egyptian lira, they're called both ways. For 9 days for 2 people we changed 250 euros and that was enough, I'd say they're sufficient, then we spent another 300 euros as extras at the hotel, mostly on dinners and lunches. By taxi to the centre, to Zamalek. Beware: taxi is a manner of speaking, the cars on the road are cars that were used in Italy about 20 years ago, Fiat 124, 127, 130, smog in the city at frightening levels. Marriott hotel, beautiful and expensive. Places you absolutely must see: the Citadel, the Egyptian Museum, the Khan el-Khalili market, the Coptic Cairo area, the pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, the Al-Azhar park.

Mosque of Moammhed Ali. Shoes in hand, obviously.

Visit to the Khan el Khalili market.. the photos speak for themselves

It is dedicated to the pharaonic era and contains more than 130 thousand artifacts. The most astounding ones are those related to Tutankhamun. You cannot take photos inside the museum. The captions are written only in Arabic and English, there are no audio guides, so get yourself some good material to make your visit complete.

The pyramids of Cheops, Chephren, Mycerinus and the Sphinx are located on the Giza plain, which you reach by taxi in about 30 minutes from the center. Don't let the taxi driver convince you during the trip to make stops along the way at his friends' shops to buy papyrus and various things, and once you arrive at the pyramids he'll tell you to take the horse/camel/carriage tour, again with his friends who will offer you outrageous prices but you'll have to haggle for a long time until you get them down by 70%!!
