Boavista is the easternmost of the Cape Verde islands and the closest to the African continent. On Boavista you breathe Africa, in the sense of deserts, endless beaches and sparse oases. Boavista is an island apart, unspoilt and wild. The island is still unspoilt and unexplored, but has a priceless wealth: a strong, engaging, thrilling nature. Sal Rei offers a square, a church, some local restaurants and a few (Chinese) shops by the little harbour, but sit at sunset on the old pier and nothing more will be missing. Having left the capital, Boavista is an island to be discovered entirely: by four-wheel drive, quad or, for the sportier, on foot. Apart from two paved roads, its connecting routes are dirt tracks.
